Karwa Chauth is a festival that celebrates love. It is one of the most popular Indian festivals and is largely celebrated in the Northern region of the nation. It is a traditional gala of love, marriage and the imperishable bond that is shared between a husband and wife. The word ‘Karwa’ translates to the earthen pot which was used in the olden time by women during the rituals that carried the water and ‘Chauth’ means fourth. A beautiful tradition that has been followed by Indian Hindu women for over years occurs in the ‘Kartik Month’ which occurs anytime between mid to late October.

Often people wonder the significance of this celebration and the rituals involved during the festival.

Karwa Chauth is also known as Niraja Vrat, which is a one day festival where married women of Hinduism fast and
pray for the health and safety of their husbands. The festival begins at the set auspicious time as per the culture, where the first ritual is the beginning of their fast that is to start right at sunrise, which is to be continued until moonrise. During their fast, they do not eat or drink anything, including water. Prayer is offered to Lord Shiva during the day. Apart from prayers,
they also deck themselves like a newly married bride, with mehendi and jewelleries preparing to break their fast.
When the moon rises, they break their fast after making various offerings and sighting the moon which is also considered as one of the most important celestial bodies according to Hinduism.

Karwa Chauth has evolved in many ways, but without losing its traditional values. Mangalsutras are worn by women
as a way of safeguarding their husband from all evil. However, in today’s world, progressive women look to keep
their traditions intact while still keeping their style and a form of self-identity intact.
